AKHIL VANJARI SEVA SANSTHA

History of Vanjari community

The nomads of India were a remarkable lot,
supplied grains to armies but never fought.
Traders and carriers, bullock carts they rode,
cattle, food and commodities they towed.

Meandering through winding rivers and roads,
jointly the merchant tribes carried cart loads.
To the british and natives, also salt they sold
labouring hard for pieces of silver and gold.

They evolved and adapted as times passed,
took up farming as they their lives recast.
They yearned for a place to take root
where they could grow fields and fruit.

Camped at nights and daily they strode
thirsting for plains and a fertile abode.
Troubled in woods and mountains by thieves
they drove through flowing water and fallen leaves.

For years they travelled and had to roam
to seek a place they could call home.
Eventually, their timeless migration ended
and they found lands, unsold, untended.

They settled in villages with seeds to sow,
hungry stomachs needed food to grow.
Barren fields and cattle to plough,
broken soil dug with shovel and hoe.

To cultivate the mountain dirts, they toiled;
harvesting the crops before they spoiled.
This was the story of the gypsies of yore
now been farmers for generations and more.
